How Twitter is making money from advertisements
On Twitter it seemed that everywhere people have lots to say but they only get 140 characters to say. If this article were on twitter, it would end now. Thankfully, we are not on twitter and I can write as many characters as I want and need. So let us get on with it.
Twitter is a large social networking website that let users send and read small messages called tweet. Millions of people do it every day and yet the site does not charge the user or run any ads. Most people ask the questions how Twitter is making money because the website does not make any profit. Something its founder is often teased.
This week Twitter has announced it is going to offer advertisement, which they call “promoted tweet”.
Here is how it works; when the user searches for a topic they are interested, for example the user search for the keyword cars. A company like Honda or other automakers will be able to buy that certain key word so their ads will pop up on top of the twitter page. Similar to the ad model on Google search engine.
It is clear that Twitter need a business model because they’d need to come up with some way to make money.
Twitter also plan to target ads to what their users are tweeting about. If you were tweeting about web design, sponsors could pay for space to show up on your page.
Some analysts say Twitter could pull in about $100 million in revenue each year. Proving that social networking is not only about making friends, it is also a way to make a lot of money.
