HTML5 History

Before we start talking about HTML5, let’s take a look back on how HTML first started. Here’ a quick history of how HTML5 was created from HTML, HTML 2.0, HTML 3.2, HTML 4.0, XHTML and then back to HTML 5.0

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is the primary programming language on the Internet.

HTML5 History

1989: Tim Berners-Lee invented the web with HTML

1991: The first discussion about HTML and the Internet

1994: The first HTML 2.0 was released and Netscape was formed later that year

1995: HTML 2.0 was standardize

1996: Microsoft Internet Explorer became available

1997: HTML3.2 was released with new features like tables, applets, text flow around images and more

1999: HTML 4.0 was release and it was a mile stone for HTML and HTML 4.0 became the standard

2000: XHTML 1.0 was adopted as a W3C Recommendation, it was to correspond and replace HTML 4.0

2004: Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) started working on HTML5 independently from W3C

2005: W3C was working with WHATWG with HTML5

2007: Mozilla Foundation and Opera joined Apple in requesting to W3C to adopt WHATWG work and HTML5 was issued by W3C in 2008

2009: W3C ended XHTML 2.0

2010: Apple, Google and Microsoft all recognize the importance of HTML5 and all agree the future of the web is HTML5
